Blue Gray Gnatcatcher
Cape Elizabeth, ME
4.25.2022
"The Blue-gray Gnatcatcher is a busy forager. It flits through dense outer foliage, hops and sidles along branches, peering with quick head movements to glean small insects and spiders. Flashing the white edges of their long tail may help them flush prey, which they then snap up while the gnatcatcher is perched, hovering, or sallying into the air after them. Pairs bond quickly on the breeding ground, with the male's initial aggression toward intruders softening as he leads the female around the territory. They explore possible nesting sites together, with one or the other occasionally mimicking nest-building. These gnatcatchers are pugnacious defenders of their territories, attacking much larger birds as well as intruding neighbors. Adults mob potential predators with other small birds. The male and female of a pair often cooperate in challenging an interloper. The male's soft territorial songs and the female's aggressive calls quickly turning to extended chase, usually by the male. More intense aggression involves soaring aerial confrontation and bill snapping, and even prolonged grappling on the ground. Although the female does most of the brooding, the male shares nest-building, incubation, and the feeding of nestlings and fledglings. While there seems to be little predation on adults, nestlings and eggs are taken by jays, magpies, and woodpeckers, and probably by snakes, crows, grackles, raccoons, squirrels, and chipmunks.â

âIf you don't feel challenged, it's because you're not doing enough. Ballet should never feel comfortable. Comfortable is lazy! If you're comfortable when you dance, you're not pushing yourself hard enough. 100 % is not enough. You have to give 200%. One tendu takes years of hard work and will never be perfect. Santa Elena, Monteverde Costa Rica
We saw these cousins of the raccoons quite often. Typically they traveled in groups of ten or so and would be hunting for grubs, frogs and lizards. As you can see they are pretty friendly.
More Info: The White Nosed Coati, also known as Coatimundi or the local term, Pizote, is very well-known in Costa Rica. Coatis are exotic animals that inhabit forested areas in Central America. They are found through most of Costa Rica, especially near the coast. You will mostly see them in the rainforest, dry forest, or cloud forest. Coatis are common in the wetlands of the country, too. You are likely to spot Coatis climbing trees or walking in groups along the paths. People have come upon large groups ranging from 10-30 of Coatis! They are pretty friendly and usually watch humans while they are eating in hope of grabbing a bite themselves. Usually, you wonât find many adult males in these groups as they are put out at the age of two.
The Coati is an omnivore just like its cousin the raccoon, meaning it eats just about anything it can find. In the forest, they love to eat tarantulas, lizards, rodents, birds, eggs, fruits and berries. Many people view them as pests â especially in cities â as they also get into garbage cans and raid campsites. Sometimes due to habitat loss, but other times because they are curious little creatures that enjoy causing mischief and eat everything it can find. costarica.org #costarica #coati #coatimundi #cuteanimals #wildlifeonearth #canonphotography #wildlifephotography #monteverde #centralamerica ...Rufous-Tailed Hummingbird. âTwas quite the cloud. I have been seeing so many photos of this âspecificâ rain cloud of late and my guess Is I was the furthest away from it. Some of the images from #sopo were incredible. Even so, and even from a distance, it was pretty spectacular. He glided quickly from the front yard; low and very fast. When he landed, he settled on a backyard perch looking ever so intently for his next meal. No doubt, this was his single purpose. The visit was brief yet fortunately, I had my camera on hand.
Cooperâs Hawk
2.2.2021
Cape Elizabeth, Me
âAmong the bird worldâs most skillful fliers, Cooperâs Hawks are common woodland hawks that tear through cluttered tree canopies in high speed pursuit of other birds. Youâre most likely to see one prowling above a forest edge or field using just a few stiff wingbeats followed by a glide. With their smaller lookalike, the Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooperâs Hawks make for famously tricky identifications. Both species are sometimes unwanted guests at bird feeders, looking for an easy meal (but not one of sunflower seeds).â
